Tooley’s Dic. of Mapm. Rev. Ed. K – P, S. 272 (Arnoldus Montanus, c. 1625-1683. ‚De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld‘, Amsterdam 1671 <considered first encyclopaedia of the Americas>, English translation published by John Ogilby as America: being the latest, and most accurate description of the New World …, London, J. Ogilby 1671 <included regional maps>). – Panorama from Mexico City printed from 2 plates. – The explanations at the bottom of the frame in Spanish from 1 – 10 and A – D. – „The city is shown from the west, above the hill of Chapultepec. The design draws from an earlier map by Johannes Vingboons, who was in turn influenced by Juan Gómez de Trasmonte’s unpublished map. While the van Meurs map was among the first to show the capital not as the Indigenous city of Tenochtitlan but as Spanish-ruled Mexico City, he still retained certain exoticizing elements, such as the lake, palm trees, and multiethnic figures. The van Meurs view became a standard image, republished in numerous texts in the late 1600s and early 1700s“. (Denver Art Museum).
